Description: A writing-intensive introduction to the meanings, origins, and functions of religion; the roles of myths, rituals, and symbols; and images of transcendence. Examines religious beliefs and expressions from diverse cultural perspectives. Utilizes materials from indigenous Native (North and South) American, African American, and/ or Asian American religions. Fulfills the third-quarter writing requirement for students who earn a grade of “C” or better for courses that the Academic Senate designates, and that the student’s college permits as alternatives to English 001C. Cross-listed with RLST 012W. Credit is awarded for only one of ETST 012/ RLST 012 or ETST 012H/RLST 012H or ETST 012W/ RLST 012W, or ETST 012X/RLST 012X. Fulfills either the Humanities or Social Sciences requirement for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Scienc- es, but not both.
