The Department of Media and Cultural Studies offers the B.A. in Media and Cultural Studies, an interdisciplinary examination of film, video, television, multimedia, and visual culture with a primary emphasis on history and theory and a secondary focus on production. The major con- sists of three curricular tracks, in one of which students may concentrate:

• 1. Film and Visual Media

• 2. Film, Literature, and Culture

• 3. Ethnography, Documentary, and Visual

Culture

The Media and Cultural Studies major com- bines the breadth of an interdisciplinary major with a precise focus on visual media. Its inter- disciplinary structure brings together approach- es to visual media that would usually be sepa- rated by discipline. Students have a unique opportunity to acquire critical skills in the read- ing and analysis of media texts together with those involved in various modes of media pro- duction. This applied experience includes train- ing in creative, documentary, and ethnographic video; photography; multimedia production; and screenwriting. Familiarity with media, either for its academic or industrial applica- tions, enhances one's understanding of any field in the humanities or social sciences today.

The B.A. in Media and Cultural Studies involves three possible tracks of courses, each with different emphases in curriculum. The requirements are as follows:

For all three tracks:

Track 1: Film and Visual Media This track gives the student comprehensive coverage in film and media studies, covering history, theory, non-Hollywood cinema and media forms, and production. Undergraduate studies prepare the student for graduate work in film studies, cultural studies with an em - phasis on visual media, or in film production.

Track 3: Ethnography, Docu men tary, and Visual Culture This cluster provides a basic knowledge of film and visual media studies as well as in-depth coverage of the theories and methods that guide production of ethnographic and docu- mentary films, and visual media. Students receive both critical and applied training in ethnographic methods and ethnographic and documentary film and video practices.

The Media and Cultural Studies minor provides an interdisciplinary examination of film, televi- sion, digital multimedia, and visual culture, with an emphasis on history and theory, rather than production, in order to develop media literacy.

A minimum of 24 units (one lower-division course and five upper-division courses) are required. No course can be used to satisfy more than one requirement.
