Describes the coupling of oxidative phosphorylation and photosynthesis to adenosine triphosphate (ATP) synthesis and the coupling of ATP hydrolysis to ion transport, chemotaxis, molecular motors, biomimetics, and other biological processes on the basis of recent structural and mechanistic studies of the protein complexes involved.
