  1. Suggest one or more appropriate search sites for each of the following searches. Be sure to suggest specialized search resources if they are available.
    1. General information on grass fertilizer.
    2. Information on the nesting habits of bald eagles in Maine.
    3. Official rules for North American professional soccer.
    4. The definition of the word "etymology"
    5. Driving instructions to travel from Toronto, Ontario to Miami, Florida.
    6. The owner of the telephone number (705) 555-1212.
    7. A word to use instead of "exciting"
    8. A software upgrade for a digital camera your friend purchased from Kodak.
    9. The Mailing address for your friend Bob Smith, who lives in Denver Colorado.
    10. The mailing address for your friend John Doe, who lives in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
    11. Locations of all of the branches of the public library in Portland, Oregon.
    12. Download a new screen saver.

  2. Compare search engines by performing the following searches using Yahoo!, Google and Lycos, and write down the number of results for each search using each engine. Notice that more search terms narrows the search and fewer results for each engine will be found.
    1. camp
    2. camping
    3. camp*
    4. camp wisconsin
    5. camp wisconsin hiking swimming OR swim

  3. Create search queries for the following searches. Use the Yahoo! search directory, or another search site that uses Boolean operators and perform the following searches:
    1. Fertilizers for grass
    2. Dog training for a beagle
    3. Recipe containing chicken, red peppers, and chili powder.
    4. Music festivals in North America in the summer months.
    5. Colleges and universities in Brithish Columbia, Canada.
    6. Current Video games, but not Nintendo video games.

  4. Choose several fo the sites found in any of the searches in the above question. Use the evaluation criteria to determine whether the sites you have found contain information you could rely on.

  5. Open the Download.com site in your Web browser and sesarch for the following:
    1. What are the five most popular software downloads?
    2. Find at least three different file compression programs.
    3. Find some games. Notice which files are shareware, freeware, or open source, and which are compressed.

  6. And now for the hard questions that me and Peter made up (bwah hah hah!!)
    1. Name at least 2 things special about the giant C behind UCR.
    2. If you are facing the White House and standing on Pennsylvania Ave. are the white house tennis courts to the right or left side of the center of the white house?
    3. What operating system does Peter Lonjers use?
    4. How tall is the computer you are using in lab?
    5. What is the title of a paper about a project Peter Lonjers did that involved 6 legged creatures?
    6. What is the name of the lab Marc Soriano does research in and what kind of research is it?
    7. If you have seen a Stormtrooper walking around during Halloween, that is Marc Soriano. As per Star Wars canon, every Stormtrooper has a given ID number (e.g. Luke Skywalker was  disguised as TK-421 in A New Hope). What is Marc's stormtrooper ID number? Hint 501st legion
    8. Will you see that stormtrooper patrolling around campus this Halloween? (save the answer for next week)
