Description: A research seminar focusing on themes in the study of the American West from the colonial era to the present. Explores migration, expansion, and modern urban development. Includes historical interpretations, readings, discussions, and research. Graded In Progress (IP) until HIST 273A and HIST 273B are completed, at which time a final grade is assigned. Students begin a paper based on archival research, oral history, and material culture. After completing both HIST 273A and HIST 273B, students may repeat the sequence once for credit; total credit for each course may not exceed 8 units.
