Description: Survey of modern Japanese thought from a theoretical and intellectual historical perspective. Topics include philosophical discussions of modernization, “Westernization,” nationalism, colonialism and imperialism, “comfort women,” Japanese war crimes in continental Asia, the American bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, post-World War II remembrance and denial. All readings are in English.
