Description: Focuses on theory and applications of scanning probe microscopy in sur- face science, including the use of scanning tunneling microscopy to image surfaces on the atomic and molecular length scale, and scanning probe tech- niques to investigate and control elementary steps of surface reactions. Reviews surface crystallography, electronic, and phononic band structure. Students who present a seminar or submit a term paper receive a letter grade; other students receive a Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC) grade. Course is repeatable. Bartels
