Prerequisites: graduate standing; consent of instructor

Description: Focuses on theory and applications of scanning probe microscopy in surface science, including the use of scanning tunneling microscopy to image surfaces on the atomic and molecular length scale, and scanning probe techniques to investigate and control elementary steps of surface reactions. Reviews surface crystallography, electronic, and phononic band structure. Students who present a seminar or submit a term paper receive a letter grade; other students receive a Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC) grade. Course is repeatable. Bartels
