Description: A review of the intellectual, social, and historical background to the development of prehis- toric and historic archaeology of the Old World (Africa and Eurasia), including the historical context to the rise of human paleontological and paleoanthropological studies. Particular attention is given to the evolution of ideas about prehistoric and historic chronology.
