Description: A review of the intellectual, social, and historical background to the development of prehis- toric and historic archaeology of the Old World (Africa and Eurasia), including the historical context to the rise of human paleontological and paleoanthropologi- cal studies. Particular attention is given to the evolu- tion of ideas about prehistoric and historic chronology.
