Lab Information

Please read the following carefully, as it explains your options for completing the lab assignments for weeks 3 - 10.

Overview

Starting in week 3, you will be using the lab manual to complete assignments using Microsoft Office. The publisher has a web-based system, called MyITLab, that allows you, for each lab, to download an initial document, modify that document according to the lab instructions, and then submit the completed document for grading. If there are errors, MyITLab gives you a list of the issues, which you can correct and then re-submit. You can re-submit a lab assignment for grading up to 5 times. In order to receive full credit for a lab, your submitted document must be at least 85% correct.

Because MyITLab is web-based, you are not required to attend your lab section to complete the assignments. You can use any computer (assuming it has Microsoft Office 2013) to complate and submit the lab assignments.

The lab manual instructions and examples assume you are using Microsoft Windows. If you are using a Mac, the user interface for the Microsoft Office programs is quite different, so it may be difficult to follow the examples and instructions. You are welcome to try, but if it is too difficult, it is up to you to find a Windows computer to do the labs. Of course, you can use the computers in the lab room (Winston Chung 132) during open lab times (Monday - Thursday 12-1PM, Fridays 12-5PM).

In order to access MyITLab, you need an access code. If you bought the book package from the bookstore, an access code was included along with the lab manual (and the text book). If you did not, an access code needs to be purchased separately from the MyITLab web site (see below). Because of the cost involved with this, I have decided to make using MyITLab optional. If you decide to not use MyITLab, you must attend your regularly scheduled lab section each week to do the appropriate lab assignment and have it graded by your TA in lab. If you do not finish an assignment during your scheduled lab section, you can arrange with your TA to come in during one of his other lab sections or during his open lab times to complete it. You should not attend other TAs' lab sections as only your TA can grade your lab assignments.

Whether you choose to use MyITLab or to attend your lab sections to do the labs, you will need a lab manual to complete the work.

MyITLab Access Codes Options

Following are the options for obtaining a MyITLab access code:

  1. Purchase the package from the bookstore. This will include your lab manual and the access code.
  2. Purchase the access code, along with ebooks, from the MyITLab web site. For $80, you can purchase the access code, along with e-book versions of the lab manual and the text book.
  3. Purchase the access code, with no ebooks, from the MyITLab web site. For $60, you can purchase the access code only. If you choose this option, you will need to obtain a lab manual on your own (such as buying one from a student who took the class last quarter). If you do this, make sure you buy the 2013 edition of the lab manual, not the older 2010 edition, as the labs are completely different.

Note: The MyITLab web site currently does not have the $60 access code only option available. It will be available in about a week. However, the web site allows you to create and use an account without paying for 2 weeks. Therefore, if you go with option 3, you can sign up immediately and then pay in a week or so when the $60 option is available.
