Description: Examines religions of modern China from Ming to the present. Considers religion and its relationship to politics, society, and culture in the imperial, republican, and communist contexts and the American diaspora. Engages with both heterodox and “mainstream” or “officially sanctioned” traditions while evaluating the factors that merit labels.
