Description: Explores the history of early modern empires in the Middle East (the Ottomans and Safavids) in a comparative format. Focuses on such issues as Islam and conquest, state formation, confessional empires and toleration, commerce, and culture. May be taken Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC) with consent of instructor and graduate advisor. Course is repeatable.
