Prerequisites: graduate standing Examines theoretical issues of late nineteenth-century European modernities

Description: Utilizes literature, art, and popular images from France, England, Austria, and Russia. Addresses aesthetics, consumption, mass culture, fashion, melodrama, technology, psychology, and nihilism. Includes works by Baudelaire, Zola, Braddon, Boucicault, Turgenev, Manet, Degas, Daumier, and Klimt. Course is repeatable as content changes to a maximum of 12 units.
