Description: Examines nineteenth- century American literature and culture through literary productions from canonical novels to journalism and poetry. Includes cultural texts in the form of songs, paintings, sculpture, theater, and vaudeville. Explores contemporary discourses relating to shifting conceptions of gender, sexuality, religion, science, class, and race. Course is repeatable as content or topic changes to a maximum of 8 units.
