Description: Historical perspectives on U.S. mass incarceration. Explores historic roots of conquest, colonialism, racial subjugation, capitalism, and labor systems linking current mass incarceration, detentions, and deportations of unauthorized immigrant classes. Examines critical historic turning points and current social, economic, and political dynamics. Course meetings alternate between historic and contemporary issues.
