Description: Discusses human feeling as a factor in shaping the past. For example, the uses of folk dance and music in New York’s Pinkster festival (1750- 1840) are considered and related to political developments in the larger society. The works of Herman Melville Benito Cereno, Arna Bontemps Black Thunder, Mark Twain Huckleberry Finn, and Paule Marshall Praise Song for the Widow are read for what they reveal of the historical process.
