Prerequisites: graduate standing or consent of instructor
Description: A study of theories and practices of rhetoric, argument, persuasion, and, in some cases, poetics in ancient China and Greece (texts dating from the fifth to the third centuries B.C.), as well as some of their implications for contemporary theory and practice. Students who submit a seminar paper receive a letter grade; other students receive a Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC) grade. This course may also be taken on a Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC) basis by students advanced to candidacy for the Ph.D.
