Prerequisites: admission to the University Honors Program or consent of instructor

Description: Honors course corresponding to PHIL 002. Philosophical analysis of contemporary moral issues such as abor- tion, discrimination, sexual morality, punishment, the obligation to obey the law, suicide, euthanasia, war, and privacy. Satisfactory (S) or No Credit (NC) grading Upon the submission of this paper, the graduate advisor selects three faculty members to serve as the M.A. committee, which conducts an oral examination on the paper. Normally the oral examination will be completed before the end of the student’s second year, but it may be postponed until the fall quarter of the student’s third year. Failure to pass the M.A. oral examination after two opportunities constitutes grounds for dismissal from the program. In addition, completion of the M.A. requirements does not guarantee permission to continue in the Ph.D. program.
