Description: Historical perspectives on U.S. mass incarceration. Explores historic roots of conquest, colonialism, racial subjugation, capitalism, and labor systems linking current mass incarceration, deten- tions, and deportations of unauthorized immigrant classes. Examines critical historic turning points and current social, economic, and political dynamics. Course meetings alternate between historic and contemporary issues.
