Description: Compares the poetic goals and strategies of each of the three sections of Dante’s Commedia -- Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso --with the innovative cine- matic languages of leading post-World War II Italian filmmakers, including Rossellini, Pasolini, Fellini, Antonioni, Cavani, Wertmuller, Nichetti, and Moretti. Integrates theoretical discussions of representation, desire, knowledge, gender, sexuality, and subjectivity with close textual analysis of poetry and film.
