Description: Survey of modern Japanese thought from a theoretical and intellectual historical perspective. Topics include philosophical discussions of modernization, “Westerni- zation,” nationalism, colonialism and imperialism, “comfort women,” Japanese war crimes in continental Asia, the American bombing of Hiroshima and Naga- saki, post-World War II remembrance and denial. All readings are in English.
