Description: Explores the role of African Americans in the U.S. political economy. Examines the interaction of class, race, the state, and social institutions determining the economic life chances of Americans of African descent. Fulfills the Social Sciences requirement for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. ETST 109-I The Black Diaspora: Cultural, Political, and Historical Connections (4) Lecture, 3 hours; extra reading, 3 hours. Prerequisite(s): ETST 003, upper-division standing; or consent of instructor. Examines the dispersal and evolution of transplanted African populations throughout the world. Emphasis is on the most recent diaspora between 1600 and 1890 when millions of Africans migrated to the Western Hemisphere. The smaller African communities in Asia, Europe, and the Pacific Islands are also examined. Fulfills either the Humanities or Social Sciences requirement, but not both, for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
