Description: Reviews the historical processes and regional circumstances that have governed relations between indigenous peoples and Latin American states. Studies concepts of nationalism, ethnicity, and the state in the context of indigenous efforts to resist assimilation and to gain limited autonomy. Compares with the problems and prospects of multiethnic societies worldwide.
