Prerequisites: graduate standing or consent of instructor

Description: Intensive research in American literature and culture to 1900. Topics may include nineteenth- century novel; slavery and narrative; gender and colonial literary culture; Whitman and Dickinson; or other historical, gender-centered or theoretical issues. Course is repeatable as content changes.
