Description: Examines theoretical issues of late nine- teenth-century European modernities. Utilizes litera- ture, art, and popular images from France, England, Austria, and Russia. Addresses aesthetics, consump- tion, mass culture, fashion, melodrama, technology, psychology, and nihilism. Includes works by Baudelaire, Zola, Braddon, Boucicault, Turgenev, Manet, Degas, Daumier, and Klimt. Course is repeat- able as content changes to a maximum of 12 units.
