Description: Introduces major debates in history, politics, and culture through the genres of biography, autobiography, diary, and confession. Explores the parallel construction of the modern nation, the mod- ern language, and the modern self. Traces the devel- opment of Japan’s “I-novel.” Builds skills in close reading by studying the rhetoric of self-narrative.
