Description: Examines the regional and social variation in language use within the Chicano commu- nity. Specific issues addressed are the maintenance of Spanish language use, private versus language use, the need for bilingual social services, language as a human right versus language as a constitutional right, and the political economy context of language. General sociolinguistic theory and methodology are also addressed. Cross-listed with SOC 165. Fulfills the Social Sciences requirement for the College of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences.
