Description: Examines relations between society, machine, and state in ancient China, Greece, and Rome, and in medieval Europe. Focuses on key mechanical and civil technologies and the role of the state in differentiating their development between the four historic civilizations. A major theme concerns the relation of craft and state technologies to abstract nat- ural reasoning as a historical background to scientific revolution in Europe.
