Prerequisites: graduate standing or consent of instructor

Description: Compares the poetic goals and strategies of each of the three sections of Dante’s Commedia—Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso—with the innovative cinematic languages of leading post-World War II Italian filmmakers, including Rossellini, Pasolini, Fellini, Antonioni, Cavani, Wertmuller, Nichetti, and Moretti. Integrates theoreti- cal discussions of representation, desire, knowledge, gender, sexuality, and subjectivity with close textual analysis of poetry and film.
