Learn about Your Account

The CS account you receive allows you to log into any computer within this building. You will see a drive H: with you account name in the description. This is your own network drive in Computer Science department. Nobody else can access it and you can access it from any Computer Science machines at any time.

Getting Started

Tasks for today covers project 1A and 1B of the MS Word section, from page 165 to 216. Work file can be downloaded by right click on this link and select save link as.... Save the files to drive H:, which should contain your account name in the description.

Project 1A

Here is what you should learn from Project 1A:

  1. Know about the interface: title bar, menu bar, toolbar; learn to customize toolbar using toolbar option button (try both left click and right click);
  2. Learn about menu: full menu vs short menu; how to know a shortcut key about a menu command; menu conventions in Figure 1.10;
  3. Learn to navigate through the document, using scroll bar and shortcut keys;
  4. What is formatting mark display and how to enable/disable it;
  5. What are views and how to switch the current view;
  6. How to zoom in and out to a specific percentage;
  7. How to check individual errors in spell checking and how to spell check the whole document;
  8. How to work with header and footer;
  9. How to save the document in a newly-created folder.

Project 1B

Here is what you should learn from Project 1B:

  1. How to create a new document;
  2. What is AutoComplete and WordWrap;
  3. What is vertical alignment and how to set it;
  4. What are Overtype and insert modes;
  5. How to change font size, family, and style.
