Biographical Sketch

Trent Jaeger is a Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at the University of California, Riverside. Trent's research interests include systems and software security, and he has published over 175 research papers and is the author of the textbook "Operating Systems Security," which teaches secure operating systems and their major security mechanisms. Trent has made significant security contributions to the Linux kernel, including to the Integrity Measurement Architecture, Linux Security Modules framework, and SELinux. In recent work, he developed Linux kernel support for Intel Processor Trace (Griffin, ASPLOS 2017), security namespaces for Linux container systems (USENIX 2018), and automated privilege separation of Linux device drivers (KSplit, OSDI 2022). He is an ACM Fellow.

Trent also serves the computer security research community in several ways as an Editorial Board Member of the Communications of the ACM for Contributions (from 2020), as an Associate Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Security & Privacy Magazine (from 2020), as a Steering Committee Member of ACM CCS (from 2013), and as an Academic Advisory Board member of the UK's Cyber Body of Knowledge (CyBoK) project (from 2018). Trent was elected to Chair ACM SIGSAC (2013-2017), and also served on the ACM SIGSAC Executive Committee of ACM SIGSAC as Past Chair (from 2017-2021). He also served as General Chair and Steering Committee Chair of NDSS (from 2019-2021) and a Steering Committee Member of NDSS (2019-2023).

After getting his Ph.D. from the University of Michigan, Trent worked at IBM Research Watson from 1996 to 2005 before working at Penn State from 2005 to 2023 prior to joining UCR. While at IBM Research, Trent researched operating systems security as part the L4 team, the precursor to seL4, and he was the IBM Research lead for the IBM Linux Technology Center, where provided guidance on IBM's security plans for Linux, including contributing to the Common Criteria assurance efforts for Linux. He has been awarded 21 U.S. patents.
