RISE : More powerful, Energy efficient, Gigabyte scale storage high performance sensors

The RISE (RIverside SEnsors) project, hosted by  the ESL (Embedded Systems Lab) at the University of California, Riverside aims to investigate frontline research in wireless sensor network architectures, applications and protocols. The RISE project encompasses:

  • Hardware - Software development for embedded systems

  • Communication / networking protocols for sensor and ad-hoc networks

  • File / Database management for sensor systems.

Our goal is to mobilize the latest in hardware technologies and software methodologies to create truly versatile sensor systems, for a multitude of applications. The Sense and Store paradigm that we propose provides us with immense energy savings compared to the commonly employed Sense and Send. Our present research efforts are motivated by the requirements of  the Center for Conservation Biology at UCR.

The RISE platform is built upon the:

  • Chipcon CC1010 System on Chip
  •  Gigabyte scale - High capacity flash data storage (SD-Card)
  • STB (STorage Board), featuring NAND and NOR flash memories for efficient data storage, indexing and retrieval
  •  Multitude of sensors : Temperature (LM61),Carbon Dioxide (Vaisala GMT 220) and Voice
  •  Integrated radio transceiver, CC1000 - Compatible with MICA for interoperability and investigation into the nature of heterogeneous networks.
  • Furthermore the RISE platform has been interfaced with the Renesas M16C, and ARM 7 (LPC2138 on the MCB2130)
