TIME

This is a POV raytracing generated for the July - August 2000 Internet Raytracing Competition by David Morgan-Mar.
It is a stylistic recreation of the famous Japanese woodcut The Great Wave Off Kanagawa, all objects in the scene are white and lit in color.

Hello, I am John Jones...

I graduated from the University of California, Riverside in March 2005 with my M.S. in Computer Science.  I am now a Software Developer at Environmental Systems Research Institute ( ESRI ), in Redlands, CA.  While at UCR I was pursuing my Ph.D. in Computer Science under Prof. Chinya V. Ravishankar, working in the area of computer and network security.  The results of my efforts can be seen here and here.

"The digital computer is a machine and, like every material object, a captive in the end of various bleak laws of thermodynamics. Having run out of time, it runs out of steam. As does the computer programmer stabbing at the computer keyboard with the tips of two tense fingers. As do we all. An algorithm is otherwise. Occupying the space between the pinprick of desire and the resulting bubble of satisfaction, it is an abstract instrument of coordination, supplying procedural means to various ends. Contrived of signs and symbols, algorithms like thoughts, reside in a world beyond time."
-- David Berlinski, The Advent of the Algorithm.

Brief Academic History

I began as an undergraduate in Electrical Engineering at UC Riverside in the Fall of 1996 after graduating from John W. North High School in Riverside, CA.  During my first year I discovered that I also enjoyed Computer Science and decided to continue on in both majors.  Throughout my undergraduate career I developed a preference for Computer Science and upon graduating Suma Cum Laude in June 2000 I decided to continue my education in Computer Science at the University of California, San Diego.

During the 2000-2001 school year I was working towards my Masters of Science degree @ UCSD by taking a lot of graduate level classes in a wide spectrum of fields.  After a year of taking classes at UCSD I decided to take an opportunity to return to UCR to work on my doctorate with Ravi on the SWiFT project.  At this time I also got married to my long-time girlfriend Carol.

In August 2008 Carol received her Ph.D. in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology under the direction of Katherine Borkovich. The title of her dissertation is " Two-Component Signaling Pathways in the Filamentous Fungus, Neurospora crassa." I will link to a copy of the PDF once the embargo has been lifted. Carol is currently teaching Microbiology 121 at UCR during the Fall 2008 quarter.

In March 2005 I left UCR with my M.S.in Computer Science.  After a year spent doing some independent contract programming I recently started my first 'real' job at Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) where I am a member of the software development team working on their desktop ArcGIS product.

Brief Personal History

Wedding Picture

I was born ( July 16, 1978 ) and raised in Riverside, CA.   The hospital where I was born is now a Lowe’s Home and Garden ( I was born in the Nursery, of course ).  Both of my parents grew up in Riverside as well.  My father, Kinney Jones, is a motorcycle photographer.  My mother, Paula Jones, owns and runs Art’s Bar & Grill, a restaurant in downtown Riverside that she opened with my grandfather (Art).

As mentioned above Carol & I were married July 7, 2001 at Calvary Presbyterian Church in Riverside, CA.  On our honeymoon we went to Hawaii.

On May 17, 2002 Carol & I bought a house in Moreno Valley, CA.  We now live there with our three beagles Sabrina, Harvey & Libby.

We are currently expecting our first child (a girl) on or about March 15, 2009.
