The following sections can be ignored; they will _not_ be on the midterm. Chapter 1: Arts: Shall we Dance? Dig Deeper: What Can You Do with a Digital Home? Legal System: Welcome to the Virtual Courtroom Sports Sciences: Compute Your Way to a Better Game Technology in Focus: The History of the PC The Turing Machine The ENIAC Chapter 2: Keyboards (ignore the following sub-sections): How can I use my keyboard most efficiently? Are keyboards different on notebooks (laptops)? Mice (ignore the following sub-sections): What else can I do with my mouse? Are game controls considered mice? What other types of input devices are available? Sound Input (ignore the following sub-section): What types of microphones are available for my computer? Are expensive microphones worth the money? Ethics in IT: What is Ethical Computing? Dig Deeper: How Inkjet and Laser Printers Work What kinds of external drive bays to most PCs have? Setting it All Up (except the definition of 'ergonomics') ---------- The book often goes into quite a bit of detail about subjects. However, unless I discussed those details in lecture, you should not need to worry about them for the midterm. In Chapter 1, for example, the book talks about UPS using something called a MaxiCode. However, I did not discuss this in lecture, so you do not need to know about it. Likewise, the book mentions a few specific law enforcement databases (such as the NCAVC), but I did not name them, so do not worry about them. In Chapter 3, examples would be the sections on sound input and sound output. The book talks about different types of microphones (unidirectional vs omnidirectional) and speakers with sub- woofers; I did not talk about any of these, so they will not be on the test. For the Technology in Focus section, you only need to know the specific people and other information we discussed in lecture. Also, you do not need to memorize dates; just know general timeframes. For example, I would not ask what year the Altair computer was introduced, though I might ask what decade (the 1970's).
