Required Class Material

Course Summary:

This is a Remote Learning (i.e. Online) Course

Following is a summary of how the course will work.

Lectures
- Lectures will be held online using Zoom during the normally scheduled class meeting times. See the Meeting Times section for the Zoom meeting information for each lecture.
- Students will not need to turn on their webcams during lectures (except during quizzes).
- Students can ask questions during lectures using Zoom chat.
Quizzes
- Quizzes will also be given online during the normally scheduled class meeting times on the quiz dates using Canvas and Zoom.
- Students will take the quizzes in Canvas. While taking the quizzes, students must be logged into the class lecture Zoom meeting with their webcams turned on, pointed at them, and should clearly show their face and immediate surroundings.

- If any student needs to setup a personal appointment, that will also be held using Zoom.

Labs
- All labs are web-based and must be completed and submitted online using a web browser.
- See the Required Class Material section for information on how to purchase the lab material and the Labs section for instructions on how to submit labs for grading.
- The lab sections have no scheduled meeting times. Instead, the TA will have a number of online lab office hours each week during which time students can get assistance if they are having any problems with any of the labs.

Student Computer Requirements
- A desktop or laptop computer, broadband Internet access, and camera/mic/headphones are required (not smartphones); see computer options at computer requirement or ITS.
- UCR provides two free options for students without access to a computer:

Required Class Material:

Textbook:	None	Labs:	Web-Based (see below)

Textbook: No textbook will required for this class. Quizzes will be based on material presented during lectures. Web-Based Labs: Please read the following instructions carefully. All of the labs for this class are web-based and can be completed at any time. In other words, you do not have to do them during the scheduled lab times. However, the TA will be available during the scheduled lab times to assist any students needing help. You will do most of the labs using a website called Amazon Web Services (AWS). Though anybody can create a normal AWS account for free, we are using "special" AWS accounts that allow you to share your workspace with your TA for grading. Click the following link for instructions on how to setup your AWS account. Do not worry that the instructions are for CS 8; they work just fine for CS 6 as well. AWS Setup Instructions If you have problems setting up your account, please contact the TA for assistance. Once you have setup your AWS account, you will need to use a special URL in order to login to AWS to do your labs. AWS Login Page Note: Once you have completed the first lab (HTML Lab 0), you must share your AWS workspace with your TA so he can grade your assignments remotely. Labs / Presentation

All labs are web-based, which means they must be completed and submitted using a web browser. You should use the latest version of Google Chrome to do the labs. Using any other browser is highly discouraged.

You will need to share your AWS workspace before the due date for the first lab (i.e. Thursday, July 30, 11:59 PM). See the link above for instructions on how to do this.

No late lab assignments will be accepted without a doctor's note or other evidence of a serious situation which prevented you from being able to do school work for several days.

Quizzes

The quizzes will be given at 10:00 AM every Monday (except the first week) during the first part of the lecture period and will cover the material discussed in the previous week. The last quiz will be given during the scheduled final exam time on Saturday, August 30.
The quizzes are not cumulative.
The quizzes are not open-book; you cannot use any notes.
The quizzes will be taken online via Canvas and Zoom.
- Each quiz will be available in Canvas only during its scheduled time (see above) and will require a passcode.
- You will need to connect to the class Zoom meeting and turn on your webcam or, if your computer does not have a webcam, connect to Zoom with your smart phone and use its camera. Either way, the camera should be pointed at you and should clearly show your face and immediate surroundings.
- When connecting to the Zoom meeting, use your name as it appears in Canvas for your Zoom username. Do not use initials, abbreviations, etc.
- The Canvas passcode needed to open the quiz will be given in the Zoom meeting chat.
- You should remain in the Zoom meeting with your camera turned on the entire time you are taking the quiz. After you have submitted your quiz in Canvas, you can then drop from the Zoom meeting.

Cheating Policy

Cheating on quizzes or lab assignments will not be tolerated. Anyone caught cheating will receive an "F" in the class, even for the first offense.
